Summer 2013 Trips

May-August 2013

Three CI-PIRE participants performed collaborative research at our partners' locations in the Summer of 2013. One PhD student from UNCC, one PhD student from FAU, and one BS student from FIU participated. The students were supervised by their major professors from their home university and scientists at their destinations; two of the students were accompanied by thie major professors for a portion of their visit. Each student visited different laboratories: 1 to Kaseya in Australia; 1 to Technische Universitat in Darmstadt, Germany; and 1 to the Universite Paris Descartes in Paris, France. Summer 2012 Trips

May-August 2012

Four CI-PIRE participants performed collaborative research at our partners' locations in the Summer of 2012. Two PhD students from UNCC, one PhD student from FAU, and one MS student from FIU participated. The students were supervised by their major professors from their home university and scientists at their destinations; two of the students were accompanied by thie major professors for a portion of their visit. Each student visited different laboratories: 1 to North Carolina State University to learn about the VCL project and then to UFF in Brazil to apply that knowledge to a new area; 1 to Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain with a one week visit to the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland; 1 to Technische Universitat in Darmstadt, Germany; and 1 to the Universite Paris Descartes in Paris, France. Summer 2011 Students Present Research

The Ninth Latin American Grid (LA Grid) Summit, hosted November 3-4, 2011 by Florida Atlantic University, once again gathered together representatives from LA Grid's industry and academic partners while featuring the work of the 2010-2011 NSF PIRE participants. The fourth cohort of PIRE student participants presented their research accomplishments by showcasing their summer 2011 international research experiences. Each poster presentation is captured in a YouTube video at the CIPIRE channel. Michael Whitney received the First Place award for his poster, 'Language Acquisition: Moving to Learn and Training to Hear.' Xabriel Collazo-Mojica received the Second Place award for his poster, 'Cloud Application Mapping and Scaling Based on Monitoring of QoS Requirements.' In addition to the 11 posters presented by PIRE participants, PIRE students, faculty, and international partners were actively involved in two panel discussions: 'Opportunities and Challenges of International Research Collaborations' and 'Discussion on Research Directions and Applications' which allowed those gathered to focus on the needs of students and international partners as well as the program's sustainable future.

Eleven CI-PIRE participants performed collaborative research at our partners' locations in the Summer of 2011. All of the student participants were Ph.D. students -- five were from FIU, three from UNCC, two from FAU, and one was from UPRM. The participants performed their research under the supervision of their major professors from their home university and scientists at their destination laboratories. All eleven students visited different laboratories: 1 at Barcelona Supercomputing Center in Barcelona Spain; 1 at Yahoo! Research in Barcelona Spain; 1 at University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain; 1 at Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha in Spain; 1 at both the Unversidad Complutense de Madrid in Madrid, Spain, and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands; 1 at Universita degli Studi di Milano, Italy; 1 at Gamr7 SAS in Leon, France; 1 at INRIA in Bordeaux, France; 1 at IBM's TJ Watson Research Lab; 1 at Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, China; and 1 at the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. The FIU School of Computing and Information Sciences, with partners FAU and UNCC, is pleased to announce an exciting international research and career development opportunity for students from FIU, FAU, UNCC, UM, and UPRM. PIRE is looking for highly qualified undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students in Science and Engineering disciplines who are interested in:

  • Working on critical real-world applications that use or extend cyberinfrastructure as part of an international R & D team
  • Experiencing unique technology research and development at top academic and industry laboratories around the world
  • Gaining experience in international collaboration and the global economy, which will expand your career opportunities.

The PIRE program includes:

  • Collaboration-driven trips (6 weeks to full semesters in length) to research sites in Argentina, Brazil, China, France, India, Italy, Mexico, and Spain
  • PIRE Fellowships, up to $10,000 per semester, which will be awarded to superbly-qualified PhD students
  • Monetary awards for winners of its annual poster session
  • Cutting-edge research co-supervised by SCIS faculty and international research partners: Cyberinfrastructure Enablement, Cluster/Grid and Supercomputing, Hurricane Mitigation, Bioinformatics, and Health Informatics.

Summer 2010 Students Present Research

Florida International University hosted the Eighth Latin American Grid (LA Grid) Summit October 28-29, 2010. The Summit gathered together representatives from LA Grid's several industry and academic partners and featured the work of the 2009-2010 NSF Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) participants. The third cohort of CI-PIRE student participants presented their research accomplishments, showcasing their Summer 2010 international research experiences. Javier Delgado received the First Place Award for his poster, 'Work Results Development of a Simulator for Scheduling on Virtual Machines.' Eduardo Ruiz was recognized with the Second Place Award for his poster, 'Correlating Real Time Series with Micro-Blogging data.' Poster Presentations

Prior to the poster session, thirteen students provided introductory details describing their research and international experiences to the LA Grid Board of Governors and community researchers. Following the student presentations and poster session, the LA Grid and PIRE community participated in two plenary sessions that focused on opportunities and challenges presented by international research collaborations and a discussion of research directions and applications. The following day included discussions that led to more focused research clusters and a distinguished industry lecture by Dr. Chung-Sheng Li of IBM's TJ Watson Laboratory.

   

Summer 2010 Trips

May-August 2010

Twenty eight CI-PIRE participants performed collaborative research in cyberinfrastructure enablement at our partners' locations in the Summer of 2010. Fourteen students from FIU, ten students from FAU, three students from UNCC, and one student from UPRM engaged with researchers at IBM TJ Watson and Almaden research centers in the US, UFF, USP, and UFG in Brazil, Tsinghua University and IBM CRL in China, UdR1 and REIN in France, IBM IRL in India, University of Milano in Italy, NII in Japan, Eindhoven University in the Netherlands, and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and Yahoo! CI-PIRE is now supporting student participants who live outside the South Florida area. To accomodate these students and to enable asynchronous participant training, we have adopted the GlobalScholar study abroad training model. Summer 2009 Students Present Research


Students and researchers gathered for the Seventh LA Grid Summit.
The Seventh Latin American Grid (LA Grid) Summit, hosted October 22-23, 2009 by Florida International University, gathered together representatives from LA Grid's sixteen industry and academic partners and featured the work of the 2008-2009 NSF Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) participants. Students from FIU and FAU presented posters showcasing their summer 2009 international research experiences. Eric Meyer received a First Place Award for his poster, "Enhanced Grid Enabled Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)/Superensemble Portal." Scott Roepnack was recognized with a Second Place Award for his poster, "Enhancing Item-Based Collaborative Filtering by Incorporating Tags." More...

In addition to the poster session, eighteen students provided introductory details describing their research and international experiences to the LA Grid Board of Governors and community researchers. Following the student presentations, the LA Grid and PIRE community participated in two plenary sessions. These sessions summarized completed research and explored focus areas for future research. It was clear that our PIRE students were excited about their growth and experiences, citing ways these could be brought to bear on their future professional lives.

2009 Cultural and Language Training Program

February 2009

PIRE Program Students met at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus for their first session of Language and Cultural Training. PIRE PI Yi Deng welcomed this second cadre of students and Liza Carbajo, Director of FIU's Office of Education Abroad, provided an introduction to the Language and Cultural Training students will be receiving. Dr. Aixa Perez-Prado led a workshop on Cross-Cultural Communication and Interaction. Students will be meeting periodically through March and April to receive instruction about the language, culture, and business practices of the countries they will visit: India, France, Brazil, China, Spain and Mexico.

2009 Student Participants Selected

February 2009

The 2009 FIU-FAU PIRE Executive committee, led by Dr. Yi Deng, completed the selection of the second cadre of PIRE students. There were 54 applicants received for the 2009 selection from both FIU and FAU from which 24 students were selected. The selected students will travel to China, Brazil, France, Spain, Mexico and India to conduct research with our collaborative partners.

The School of Computing and Information Sciences at Florida International University and Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Florida Atlantic University are recruiting new students to participate in an exciting international research and career development opportunity. We are actively looking for highly-qualified undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Information Technology. Collaboration-driven trips to international research sites in Mexico, Argentina, Spain, China, India, France, and Germany for 6-10 week trips during Summer 2009 and semester-long trips in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters will be supported. Graduate Assistants will retain their existing assistantship support during their trips. In addition, PIRE Fellowships, up to $10,000, will be awarded to superbly-qualified PhD students.

The Sixth Latin American Grid (LA Grid) Summit, hosted October 30-31, 2008 by Florida Atlantic University, gathered together representatives from LA Grid's fourteen industry and academic partners and featured the work of the 2007-2008 NSF Partnership for International Research and Education (PIRE) participants. Students from FIU and FAU presented posters showcasing their summer 2008 international research experiences. In addition to the poster session, six students were selected to make detailed presentations of their research and international experiences to the LA Grid Board of Governors and community researchers. To conclude the general meeting, PIRE students, their faculty advisers, and collaborators participated in a panel session that explored ways that participating institutions, faculty and students can successfully create and sustain international research collaborations. Throughout the sessions students remarked on how the PIRE program provided participants with growth opportunities they had not encountered in their previous academic or professional careers.

Summer 2008 Trips

Eighteen PIRE participants are performing hands-on research in cyberinfrastructure enablement at our partner institutions in the Summer of 2008. Nine FIU students and nine FAU students are engaged in collaborations with Tsinghua University and IBM's China Research Laboratory in Beijing, IBM's India Research Laboratory in New Delhi, the University Nacional de La Plata in Argentina, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and Universitat Politènica de Catalunya in Spain, and the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico. 2008 Cultural and Language Training Program

February 2008

The 2008-2009 PIRE participants met on Feb. 2nd, 2008 for the first session of the FIU/FAU PIRE Cultural and Language Training Program. Dr. Yi Deng, the PIRE Principal Investigator, welcomed the students and explained the research aspects of the program. Wendy Lo, of FIU's Institute for Asian Studies, provided an overview of the Cultural and Language training program and introduced the instructors who will lead a series of sessions that will provide the PIRE participants who will travel to Argentina, China, India, Mexico, and Spain during 2008-2009 with an overview of the culture, customs, and language of their destination. Students received in-depth travel instructions from Liza Carbajo, Director of FIU Office of Education Abroad, on topics including safety, financial arrangements & budgeting, and travel documents. We received 68 competitive applications at FIU and FAU, among which we could only select 27 applications for PIRE in 2008-2009.
